Nathaniel Burden built the Burden Hotel in 1857. It was the fourth building to be built in San Saba. It was also the first stone building to be erected.
According to the 1860 census, Burden lived at the hotel with his wife, Sarah, and his four children. When Burden died in 1870, his daughter, Sarah Burden Yarbrough, and her husband, John Deskin Yarbrough, operated the hotel. Some of their descendants still reside in San Saba County.
The Burden Hotel stands west of the courthouse square in the heart of the historic downtown district. It has served the community for almost 150 years as a private residence, a hotel and more recently, a law office. At this time, archeological excavations are taking place on the grounds with plans underway to restore this historic structure.
